HELP US TO CONTINUE TO MOVE FORWARD!

2022 brought us a breeze of hope as the community reopened, pandemic measures were lifted and more social gatherings were planned. Although, to many, the quick return to pre-pandemic life created increased feelings of anxiety as many of our senior members continue to struggle and cope with the looming risk of possible illness, the vulnerability of having complex health conditions and the inability to move forward.

We have learned that despite our doors being open for in-person programming, some members and clients have chosen not to return to our centres, just yet. From a recently conducted Wellbeing survey, 58% of member respondents stated that they feel “isolated, lonely, overwhelmed or anxious.”

Social isolation for seniors has been exacerbated over the last two years by physical distancing and lockdowns, impacting their physical and mental health. Social isolation has also created barriers to accessing basic needs, supports and resources affecting mood and overall health and well-being. There has been a noted higher demand for obtaining basic supplies such as food and hygiene kits, and essential services, such as transportation and in-home support. The current state of our economy and increased inflation has made life challenging for many, but even more for many of our seniors who have fixed or limited incomes.

North York Seniors Centre has shifted along the way to meet the evolving needs of our senior community. As an essential service agency, it is crucial to adapt accordingly to help, provide support and improve the quality of life for seniors. But now, it is a critical time for us. Our shrinking resources and funding to support our community in healthy ageing is becoming challenging. Our team is working on developing creative approaches and strategies to continue moving forward, however, we cannot do it alone. We need your help!
