Our History

For over 45 years, NYSC has served seniors and adults with disabilities in our community. We continue to deliver high-quality programs that meet the evolving needs of our clients.
1974

Storefront in Cummer Plaza

North York Seniors Centre collaborates with local organizations, associations, and individual supporters to deliver the best programs and services for seniors.
1977

NYSC becomes a United Way Member Agency

1987

NYSC moves to 21 Hendon Avenue

1987

NYSC partners with the Victorian Order of Nurses (VON) to deliver Adult Day Program at Seneca Village

1987

Community Support Service begins delivering in-home respite care

1998

Community Support Services and Adult Day Services expand and move to 80 Sheppard Avenue

2001

Adult Day Services expands by enhancing services and increasing program space

2002

Recreational and social programs expand in the Active Living Centre at 21 Hendon Avenue

2002

Funding is received to develop an Elder Abuse Awareness program

2009

Senior Care receives funding through the Central Local Health Integration Network (LHIN) to provide an Assisted Living Program in two buildings: 5430 Yonge Street and 35 Park Home Avenue

2010

Our Board of Directors was nominated for the Maytree Diversity in Governance Award

2013

Earned 3 year accreditation through CARF Canada

2013

Expand into Vaughan to provide in-home services at Hesperus Fellowship Village

2016

Earned 3 year accreditation through CARF Canada

2016

NYSC Transportation services successfully aligned with other community organizations to form a partnership called iRide. iRide combines the best practices of five Central LHIN agencies to create an integrated transportation services  for the community.

2017

Presented the 2017 – 2021 Strategic plan, the key priorities are:

  • Put our clients’ care and needs first
  • Define and communicate our value
  • Invest in those who provide service
  • Create partnerships and integrated services
  • Drive operational efficiency and organization sustainability
2019

Earned 3 year accreditation through CARF Canada

NYSC received funding from the Ministry of Health to open a dementia care program at Hesperus Village
2020

The world faced a pandemic, NYSC pivoted our approach to programs and services, transitioned into virtual programming to keep our community socially engaged. Food Security was a top priority for our clients/members and a shopping program was implemented to meet the need. Wellness calls was implemented on a daily basis to stay connected.

2021

NYSC was one of many community services agencies that developed and manned a COVID hotline for seniors, in cooperation with North York Toronto Health Partners and North York General Hospital.

2022

NYSC and the general public reopened its doors to re-engaged the community after the COVID-19 pandemic.

2023

NYSC slowly introduces more in-person events to fight against social isolation in the community, and to reconnect with the community.

2024

North York Seniors Centre turns 50!

NYSC is proud of the deep roots we’ve built. As we grow, we remain committed to adapting to meet the changing needs of our clients.
